01Why Opt for an Open Source Clay Alternative?
The Cost Factor
For businesses looking to automate their processes, the cost can quickly add up. From credits to data sources and various automations, the expenses can be overwhelming. Our solution tackles this issue head-on by leveraging open-source tools that are both powerful and cost-effective.
Versatility and Customization
Combining NocoDB, n8n, and Apify allows for an unparalleled level of customization, making it easy to tailor the stack to meet specific needs. Whether it’s personalizing data points in real-time or automating email verification, the possibilities are endless.
02The Stack Breakdown
- 01 · NocoDBThe tableA spreadsheet of leads, like Airtable or Clay.
- 02 · n8nThe workflowsEach button in the table sends a webhook that runs the automation.
- 03 · Apify + GPTThe researchScrape the lead’s website and ask a GPT assistant that knows your content.
- 04 · Your CRMThe hand-offPush the finished lead to HubSpot, Salesforce or Instantly.
Front-End Automation
Much like Airtable or Clay, the front-end of our stack consists of a table or spreadsheet of leads. This is where the similarities end and the innovation begins. By selecting a specific data point, we can automate and personalize information in real-time.
Real-Time Data Point Customization
One standout feature is the ability to check data points in real-time. For instance, you can instantly verify if a website is running a specific JavaScript tool. Simply click “start research,” wait a few seconds, and the system will scrape the site, returning the results immediately.
Personalization with GPT Assistants
Personalization is key to engaging leads effectively. Our stack utilizes OpenAI’s GPT technology to personalize interactions based on comprehensive data. Upload your blogs, case studies, brand messaging guides, and other relevant information to the GPT assistant. The system will then recommend tailored content pieces to catch your leads’ attention.
Marketing Score Automation
Our custom marketing score evaluates various aspects of a website to gauge its marketing effectiveness. Questions like “Does the website have clear call-to-actions?” and “Is contact information readily available?” are scored from 0 to 10. The cumulative score provides a rough idea of the site’s marketing quality, which helps prioritize leads efficiently.
Flexible Automations
From verifying emails with a two-step process to automatically following leads on LinkedIn, the system offers a range of automations. These automations ensure that each lead is approached with personalized care, making subsequent CRM integrations (like HubSpot or Salesforce) more effective.
Seamless Integration with Existing CRM and Marketing Automation Tools
Our stack is designed to easily integrate with a wide range of CRM and marketing automation tools like HubSpot, Salesforce, and Mailchimp. By leveraging APIs and customizable workflows, you can sync your existing data, automate follow-ups, and enhance your overall lead nurturing process. This ensures that you get the best of both worlds—advanced automation capabilities without disrupting your current CRM ecosystem.
Why Use a Tool Like This in the First Place?
A tool like this simplifies the complex process of automating business tasks. By integrating various functionalities into one coherent system, it reduces the manual effort required, minimizes errors, and frees up time for more strategic activities. The ease of customization allows businesses to tailor the system to their unique needs, ensuring higher efficiency and effectiveness.
How It Saves Costs by Going Open Source
Open-source tools eliminate licensing fees and provide transparency, allowing businesses to modify the software according to their needs without incurring additional costs. The community-driven development model ensures continuous improvements and updates, often at no extra charge. This makes it a highly cost-effective solution compared to proprietary software.
The Impact a Tool Like This Can Make to a Sales Team
A robust automation tool can significantly enhance a sales team’s productivity. By automating lead generation, follow-ups, and data management, it ensures that the team focuses on closing deals rather than administrative tasks. Personalized interactions powered by AI can improve engagement rates, while real-time data insights enable informed decision-making. This ultimately leads to higher conversion rates and better sales performance.

So I’ve been working on this tool. It’s kind of like an open source Clay alternative. And the reason for that is because for all the automations you would want to do on Clay, it really adds up the credits. The data sources, the automations, it just adds up. And what I do here is I combine a few things.
This is basically a back end with this front end for automating some data points on a list. So to start off, it’s kind of similar to Airtable or Clay, where you have a table or spreadsheet of leads, but this is where it starts getting interesting.
So if I were to select this one, analytics stack: most data sources usually have these data points on what type of tracking or what type of tech stack the company might have running on the website, but it’s not in real time. This is just a data point that maybe they collect once a month, or maybe even older, and it’s not really something that you can personalize or check for. In this case, I can customize the back end to check for any specific pixel. So, for example, I can check whether the website is running a 3D model JavaScript tool, and I can have that search here in real time instead of a data point. So in this case I would click start research. I’d give it a few seconds. This is running with something in the back end; there’s a webhook that’s being sent. I would have to refresh. Obviously this is all very rough, but here we go. Shows as Google Tag Manager immediately. The website was scraped, looked for those tools, and then the tool that is found is populated here.
Another one that I’m adding in, which is super useful, is this personalization help. So this personalization basically takes this contact, with all their information and everything you have on this person, and sends it to a GPT assistant. OpenAI’s GPT assistant: you can upload files. So in this case, this is a GPT assistant where I uploaded all the blogs on my website, all the pages on my website, all the case studies I have on my website, and other data points that I think are important for the GPT assistant to have, like my brand messaging guide, what are the services that I provide, what are the type of clients that I service, what’s my niche, who do I want to service. And this gives me a recommendation on content pieces that might catch this person’s attention, based on the content that I provided to the GPT. And this will streamline matching case studies and content pieces and intro content to the person on the list. You want to personalize that, and you want to personalize it in a way that uses any and every resource that your company has available. So this is done automatically. This is filled out.
Another one here is this marketing score. So this is a custom score that I developed that basically looks through the site and asks a few questions. It asks: does the website have calls to action? Does the website have clear headlines that look like somebody actually spent time writing the copy? Does the website have clear contact information? Does the website have any partners, any awards? These are things that might indicate to me that someone is paying attention to the marketing, so they get a higher score. Each question gets ranked from a score of zero to 10, and then all those questions get added up, so this end result number gives me a rough idea if that person is working on their marketing on their website. And this is done on the fly. So here I would set up an automation for review websites. Some of these failed because either the website was down or it was still in staging, so some of these might not have worked, but it’s now working with a few of them, and this is probably going to be filled out after I reset these.
Here we have a column for automations. So here we can actually set up any type of automation for this lead. This is not the only automation that I have available; there are other automations, I just have to plug them in to the webhook of this tool. And one of them is push to Instantly. So this tool is kind of like before it gets to your CRM, before it gets to any other system, you want to run all the automations here. And then, let’s say you’re running HubSpot or Salesforce: you click push to HubSpot, then that lead gets pushed to the right place, with the right sequences or the right activities that are done in that CRM.
Another step is this verify email. This is not a generic “let me send it to the provider.” No, this is a two-step verification where, if one provider says it’s invalid, we’re going to check it again with another provider to see if that’s also the case. Sometimes one provider says it’s good and another provider says, “Hey, no, this is actually out of date.” And we don’t want to email those people, because we don’t want a high bounce rate.
Another automation here is this follow LinkedIn. So if I were to click this follow LinkedIn, the tool will automatically go in with my LinkedIn cookie, through my IP address so I don’t get disconnected, and it will follow this person on LinkedIn. That will open opportunities for commenting, messaging, anything like that: anywhere where I can add value, anywhere where I can enter the conversation that this person is already having on LinkedIn, and open the possibility for a warm intro.
So this tool that I’m using now is actually still in development, still adding automations, and I think it would be a great addition to what you’re doing.
